Top off the Bachelor and Bachelorette party with Iron On EasyWeed

Simple and quick = two of my favorite words when it comes to crafting. As a bonus, this project is also low cost! If you’ve ever been involved in wedding planning you know it gets expensive fast. A creative way to cut costs is with Siser heat transfer vinyl. This no sew bride to be sash and DIY groom top hat can be customized to fit any style without breaking your budget.  DIY Bride to Be Sash

Supplies

• Black EasyWeed Heat Transfer Vinyl
• Wide White Ribbon (acetate ribbon recommended for iron)
• Iron or Heat Press
• Vinyl Cutting Machine
• Heat Transfer Cover Sheet
• Scissors

Step 1: Measure Your Ribbon

Loop the ribbon around your shoulder like a sash to measure the length. Give yourself a little extra ribbon length before cutting (I’ll explain why soon!) The ribbon width can usually be found on the spool. My ribbon is 2 1/4″ tall.

Step 2: Create and Cut Your Text

I used a script font in Silhouette Studio for my bride to be sash, but you could create your file in any software you like with any font that you think fits the bride or bachelorette party theme! I sized the text to be 2″ tall so it will fit on my ribbon. Don’t forget the most important part- horizontally flip or mirror your text before cutting! I sent my cut file (wirelessly!) to the Silhouette Cameo 3. I cut EasyWeed with the Heat Transfer Smooth setting with the blade at 2, the speed set to 8, and the thickness set to 4.

Place the HTV with the clear shiny side face down. The dull side should be face up for cutting.

Step 3: Weed the Excess HTV

When the cutter is finished, remove any vinyl pieces that are not part of your text.

Step 4: Heat Apply 

Test apply a small piece of HTV to a bit of ribbon before pressing your project. Some ribbon can scorch, discolor, or curl under high heat, and you will want to be sure your ribbon won’t do any of these before committing to pressing. While neither the acetate ribbon or grosgrain ribbon displayed any of those possibilities, I found that the EasyWeed stuck to the acetate ribbon better than the grosgrain. The ribbed texture of the grosgrain creates uneven pressure. Combine uneven pressure with my noodle arms and it’s no wonder the HTV was lifting. If you’re working with an iron and your arms can provide the pressure needed, then more power to ya! Otherwise I would suggest you make sure your ribbon is 100% acetate for easiest ironing. (Ironing instructions for 100% acetate ribbon can be found in the groom top hat section of this tutorial!)

Always press Siser HTV with a heat transfer cover sheet. A clean cloth, pillowcase, or parchment paper can be used as alternatives.

However, if you have a heat press, then applying HTV to grosgrain ribbon is no problem because the press is able to apply sufficient pressure. I pressed EasyWeed™ on the ribbon with the heat press temperature set to 305°F with medium pressure. To avoid a press mark from the carrier sheet on the ribbon, I tacked the EasyWeed for 1 second, peeled the carrier sheets hot, and pressed for another 10 seconds.

Step 5: Tie the Knot

Remember that extra ribbon we left on the end of the sash? Now you can use it to tie the ends around the bachelorette- no sewing required! This way the sash is adjustable and can be used again in the future! That’s all there is to a DIY Bride to Be Sash!

DIY Groom Top Hat

Supplies

• Top Hat
• White EasyWeed Heat Transfer Vinyl
• Wide Black Ribbon (acetate ribbon recommended for iron)
• Iron or Heat Press
• Vinyl Cutting Machine
• Heat Transfer Cover Sheet
• Scissors

Step 1: Measure Your Ribbon

Wrap your ribbon around the base of the top hat to find your length. The ribbon width can usually be found on the cardboard spool. My ribbon is 2 1/2″ wide.

Step 2: Create and Cut Your Text

I used a script font in Silhouette Studio for this project, but you could create your file in any software you like with any font that you think fits the groom or bachelor party theme! While neither the acetate ribbon or grosgrain ribbon displayed any of those possibilities, I found the EasyWeed adhered to the acetate ribbon much better than the grosgrain ribbon when using an iron. If a heat press is not available to you then I suggest choosing acetate ribbon over grosgrain.

Always iron HTV on a hard, flat surface. Align the transfer with the smooth carrier side face up on the ribbon. Cover the pressing area with a heat transfer cover sheet and press firmly. My iron covers the whole transfer so first I did a full press for 15 seconds. Then I went back and pressed in 5 second sections (never sliding my iron!) to seal all the edges. Peel the carrier while it’s hot. If your HTV lifts with the carrier simply replace the carrier and press for 5 second intervals until there is no more lifting.

Step 5: Unite the Ribbon Ends in Holy Hatrimony 

Wrap the ribbon around the hat and attach the ends in the back. Glue or tape works fine and makes this a no sew project!
