EasyWeed logo of the day – Trans Am Firebird

The Pontiac Trans Am Firebird was made famous by Burt Reynolds in the 1977 movie Smokey and the Bandit. The movie made the special edition black / gold Firebird as much a star as the lead actors. For this post, I wanted to recreate the logo and cut it in A) EasyWeed and B) colors that would most closely match those on the real Firebird. This EasyWeed logo got the Vegas Gold and Gold treatment. The Vegas Gold and Gold match perfectly. The Gold really helped sell the design!

So I started out by digitizing the Design in CorelDraw and I separated the 2 colors for cutting. I then imported the file into Roland CutStudio. You could just as easily cut this design on a craft cutter such as the Silhouette Cameo or a Cricut machine.

Cutting the Firebird design

Weeding the design was a breeze! I used the Heat Press Trick to loosen up the adhesive and make removing the excess material easier. If you don’t know the Heat Press Trick, click here for the video!

EasyWeed can be applied with a regular household iron (like in this video)… but this design has a tight registration, so I used the heat press set at 320°. The first layer (Vegas Gold) gets tacked for 1-2 seconds and the top layer gets registered and applied for the full 10 seconds.

For comparison sake, here’s the Bandit himself and the original Firebird design. How’d I do? Let me know in the comments below!
